Children of the Hand

Unfortunately the game can't be embedded, but it can still be played in-browser over on itch.io

Children of the Hand is an auto battler roguelike where you collect monsters and fuse them together to make them stronger. I worked on a team with six other people to develop it for Ludum Dare 55.

For this game, I did character design and 3D modeling. I go into the considerations and thought process behind these designs down below.

Monsters, Monsters, Monsters

My team and I decided pretty early on we wanted fusion to be the game's core mechanic, which meant the models needed to be made with modularity in mind. This led to a sort of body part theming in the creature designs.

When it came to combining the monsters together, I created a base "chimera" model for which different parts could be appended. While this system would have quickly fallen apart for a larger cast of monsters, it worked well for the four that we had.

After creating all the necessary models for the game to function, I fortunately had quite a bit of time left and thought it would be fun to create an ultimate fusion of sorts for when all the monsters were combined. We took to referring to this monster as "God," and it's definitely my favorite model that I made for this project. I'm especially proud of the fleshy mouth arm cannon.

All the monsters were modeled in Blender and textured in Substance Painter. Rigging and animations were done by my incredibly talented teammate, Jake Nguyen.
